I learned that there are actually three main types of batteries that are used to power watches. As far as being common is concerned, you have to go with silver oxide batteries. It is easily the most common used battery in watches because it has a high energy to weight ratio, making it last longer than other types of batteries. The only downside to it is the expensive nature of manufacturing this type of battery because of its silver content. Therefore, it is not usually used for watches that need to have larger batteries.
Rising in popularity and general usage are the solar cells that also present a long lasting option for watch users. The battery cells derive power from the sun, which provide the much needed energy through the watch face. Since it is the sun that provides the power, the battery does not need to be changed anymore. The third kind of watch battery is the lithium battery, which although presents a long lasting and excellent battery option, is quite expensive relative to the other watch batteries. Lithium is used more for watches that have several features, such as lighting, that are quite taxing to the batteries.
